Kiwi businesses should work with kiwi owned and operated IT partners.
You might think, of course we’d say that. After all, we’re a kiwi owned and operated IT partner. Have been for nearly 25 years.
But we don’t say that for pure self-interest or patriotic warm fuzzies. There are real practical benefits to working with local partners. And on the flipside, working with overseas-based companies can present risks that’ll end up costing you.
And remember, not all “local” companies are created equal. To get the best possible service with true value, you need someone who ticks all these boxes:
Some seemingly local companies are actually owned overseas. Or keep your files in vast overseas data farms. Or – quelle horreur! – are actually just a subsidiary of a massive, faceless corporation.
You need a 100% New Zealand partner. That’s what we are. It’s what we’ve always been. It’s what we will always be.
Global data speed is pretty impressive these days. But when you’re relying on remote services so heavily, even a small increase in performance and speed makes a big difference.
Our data centres are in Auckland and Christchurch – not Australia, or the United States, or Asia, unlike some other companies.
When your desktop calls up an app, file or email, the request never needs to leave the country – so it gets back to you fast.
Files kept here in New Zealand – not overseas
Because those data centres are in Auckland and Christchurch, that’s where your cloud-hosted files and emails live.
That can make a big difference.
You’re obliged to keep some data in New Zealand, rather than overseas. (See, for example, the Law Society’s cloud computing guidelines.) A provider that doesn’t keep all your data here by default could put you at risk.
If your provider keeps your overseas, they can be subject to the laws of those countries. And that’s not just the country in which they reside. It’s also the countries they pass through to get between you and the servers. That could mean your files are subject to different scrutiny. They might not have the level of privacy you need. They could become bedtime reading material for any authoritarian-leaning world leaders out there.
Finally, every file that goes between New Zealand and another country moves across one of just two cables: the Tasman 2 Cable to Australia, and the Southern Cross Cable to the United States and Australia. If they experience problems, your access to your overseas data will slow or stop – and those cables have taken damage before. By keeping your data overseas, you’re putting all your faith in the integrity of those cables.
Safe and secure
We have full control of our servers, so we make sure we protect your data to the highest standard. You’re not just another slot in an anonymous data farm.
